There is a difference between a hurricane and flooding, but there is also a sharp contrast between Mayor Nagin’s “chocolate” city after Katrina and the way the population in the mid west is handling and behaving in the wake of flooding there. We hear of no looting or violence and the populace seems to be pulling together. No crying for investigations and demands fo a public handout. Contrast this to the outcry after Katrina, the theories that the levees were blown up or sabotoged to rid the colored 9th ward.

Yesterday June 15, was father’s day. Had a good day up to my daughter’s. Quiet but nice. Obama gave a speech on accepting responsibility as a father and I will post a picture. Perhaps Spike Lee can make a movie on the theme, exclude white’s and get even, in his own little mind, with Clint Eastwood for omitting black’s from a couple of movies.
I honestly would not mind paying the federal gas tax if 100% of the funds were used for building and maintaining the federal highway system. I live in an area without mass transit and I do however resent 15% of my gas tax going for mass transit. A one way fare anywhere in the NYC system is $2.00, a one day unlimited pass is $7.00. Let them impose a mass transit user tax to subsidize mass transit.

I heard on one of the news channels last night Obama talking of placing a windfalls profit tax on Exxon if elected and Pelosi reiterating her refusal to allow any more drilling for oil on environmental grounds. The Leningrad Cowboys is a Finnish rock and roll band famous for its humorous songs and concerts featuring the Soviet Red Army Choir.
Currently, the band has eleven Cowboys and two Leningrad Ladies. The songs, all somewhat influenced by polka and progressive rock, and performed in English, have themes such as ‘vodka’, ‘tractors’, ‘rockets’, and ‘Genghis Khan’, as well as folkloric Russian songs, rock and roll ballads and covers from bands as diverse as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, all with lots of humour.

The Red Army Choir (Choir Aleksandrov) is a performing ensemble that served as the official army choir of the former Soviet Union’s Red Army. The choir consists of a male choir, an orchestra, and a dance ensemble. The songs they perform range from Russian folk tunes to Church hymns, operatic arias and popular music.
In 1991, The Red Army Choir participated in Roger Waters’ The Wall concert celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall. They performed an anti-war song “Bring the Boys Back Home”.
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Red Army Choir has continued performing, entertaining audiences both inside and outside Russia.

The real housing crisis is the elderly living on fixed incomes that bought their homes years ago, own them free and clear and are being forced out by the ever increasing burden of property taxes. In many small villages such as where we live these people have been active in the community, many were born there and the local tax burden is abhorrent. I know that over a 4 year period my property taxes will equal what we paid for the house. My mom whom lives in a small city says she doesn’t know how long she can keep her house as the tax bill is almost close to what her SS check is. The government needs to get real with their spending and regulations and bring property taxes down. I am not an advocate of tax breaks, but would like to see some dicipline in spending. Because most government workers, local, county, state and federal are covered by some type of bargaining agreement it is difficult to do anything constructive with the labor costs. Does anyone have an answer?

Democratic presidential frontrunner Barack Obama has won an endorsement from one of the country’s leading abortion advocacy groups — the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League, which is known formally as “NARAL Pro-Choice America.” One pro-life activist says the endorsement reveals just how “radical” Obama’s views are on the issue of abortion.
Wendy Wright, the president of Concerned Women for America, says NARAL’s endorsement seemingly indicates Obama is even more “pro-abortion” than Clinton.
“And … that may be hard to believe, considering the fact that Hillary Clinton supports partial-birth abortion …,” says Wright. “Barack Obama not only favors [that], but apparently also favors born-alive abortions — that is, even if the baby’s completely outside the woman.”

Personally I am against abortion. Much has been made of both Romney’s and Giuliani’s flip flop on the abortion issue. I also have to be completely honest. If my daughter or granddaughter made a choice on having an abortion I would discourage, but support them in whatever decision they made. Fortunately I have never been faced with this. A young girl was loaded with explosives and detonated by remote control, killing her and an Iraq soldier and wounding four others, it was claimed on Wednesday.
The Iraqi army said that an officer had been killed when the girl approached soldiers near Youssifiyah, south of the capital Baghdad.

I caught part of the Libertarian Party debate last night and as much as I kind of leaned towards Bob Barr his position on National Defense turned me back to wondering which major party will be the lesser of two evils.
I also heard Newt Gingrich state that the whole bureaucratic Department of Homeland Security needs to be revamped and replaced. It is beyond the ability for a politician or bureaucrat to be able to handle DHS or FEMA. Only the military has the necessary resources and training to handle national security and/or a major natural disaster such as Katrina. We saw how well the City of New Orleans and State of Louisiana handled it as well as FEMA.
