During a raid on the Mare Liberum, the Greek police found extensive evidence. No mainstream media outlet in Germany has yet reported on the arrest of 33 employees of German smuggling NGOs on Lesbos for “establishing a criminal association” and “smuggling”. The criminal network is funded by the EU.

On June 18, 2017, Italy documented how theIuventaof the Berlin NGOJugend hilftworked with smugglers off Libya and brought charges against the person responsible, Pia Klemp, and nine other crew members for aiding human trafficking. Since then, the NGOs knew that they had to find a way to find the illegal migrants on the high seas without making direct contact with the gangs of smugglers.
