If California’s struggle to keep the lights on isn’t already dim enough, Golden State residents should brace themselves for even darker prospects with a planned ban on the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035.
Recall that utility company responses to the state’s mandate that 60% of electricity come from renewables by 2030 and 100% by 2045 recently left millions of perspiring Californians powerless during a grueling heat wave.
Now imagine adding several tens of thousands of electric vehicles (EVs) to drain further dwindling supplies of reliable energy. Not explained are any bright ideas regarding how to recharge all those power-hungry plug-ins on windless nights.
For a reality check, let’s first recognize that about 80 percent of all U.S. energy (always measured in BTUs) comes from fossil sources, with another 8.6 percent contributed by nuclear. Of that total U.S. energy amount, solar and wind combined presently…
